Top Tips for winter camping

The El Cap Ammo Can Fire Pit heating up the night in Yosemite!

Getting ready for a winter camping trip? Perfect, we love getting out and exploring in the snow too! And luckily I know a guy that makes some pretty badass ammo can fire pits that will help keep you warm ;). Here are a few tips to get you out, enjoy the trip, stay warm, and most importantly be safe!

  1. Use a four-season tent: A four-season tent is designed to withstand heavy snow and high winds, which are common during winter camping.

  2. Use a good quality sleeping pad and a sleeping bag: A good quality sleeping pad and a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures will help to keep you warm and comfortable while camping in the snow.

  3. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear: Dress in layers and wear appropriate clothing and footwear to stay warm and dry. Make sure to bring extra clothing and footwear in case of emergency.

  4. Be prepared for emergencies: Always be prepared for emergencies by bringing a first aid kit, a flashlight, and a way to call for help. Also, be familiar with the area you are camping in and the potential hazards it may have.

  5. Use a snow shovel: Bring a snow shovel to clear away snow from your tent and campfire area. This will make it easier to set up camp and keep the area around your tent free of snow, which can make it more comfortable and safer.

  6. Insulate the propane tank: Our ammo can propane fire pits are a great option for snow camping, the fires start right up and no waiting for wet wood to light on fire. But when the temperatures start to plunge, the propane tanks have a tendency to freeze up and limit the flow of the propane. Try wrapping the tank with some insulation to keep the tank temperature high enough to enjoy your fire pit all night long!

It is also important to remember that when camping in the snow, the weather can change quickly and unexpectedly, so always be prepared and have a backup plan. Make sure to check the weather forecast and be aware of the possible hazards. It's also important to have the right gear and equipment, and to know how to use them properly.
